Serengeti vs Masai Mara: Which Safari Fits You?
The Serengeti and the Masai Mara are two halves of the same extraordinary ecosystem — separated by a border but united by the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. So which should you choose? Here is how to decide.
They Are Part of the Same Ecosystem
The Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Masai Mara (Kenya) are connected by the annual Great Migration — over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle moving in a continuous cycle following the rains. The border between them is, for the animals, invisible.
The Serengeti: Scale and Solitude
The Serengeti is vast — nearly 15,000 square kilometers of open plains, acacia woodland, and kopjes. It offers a greater sense of wilderness and solitude, particularly in the more remote northern and western corridors. Game viewing is excellent year-round.
The Masai Mara: Concentration and Accessibility
The Masai Mara is smaller and more accessible from Nairobi. It offers some of the highest concentrations of big cats in Africa and is the site of the famous Mara River crossings during the Migration (typically July–October).
Best Time for the Migration
The wildebeest are in the Serengeti from roughly November through June, calving on the southern plains in January and February. They cross into the Masai Mara from July through October before returning south. Timing your visit to either destination around the Migration is possible year-round.

If you want the Mara River crossings and easy access from Nairobi, choose the Masai Mara. If you want scale, solitude, and the full arc of the Migration, choose the Serengeti. Better yet — combine both on a single trip.
